Le Bon Marché

Founded in Paris in 1838 as a drapery and dry goods outlet, Le Bon Marché was turned into a true department store in 1850 and is considered the world's first department store. The store was the simple but brilliant concept of Aristide and Marguerite Boucicaut, the husband-and-wife team credited with the vision of successful retailing that holds true today—that customers should be treated fairly and respectfully thereby ensuring a loyal following with the result being a booming business.
